Winter damage to parking lot, Winter can exact a serious toll on your commercial parking lot. Sustained very low temperatures make many materials expand, which can result in warping and cracking. Ice and snow can also ruin a lot of the paint and markings, which can be a safety hazard. If you have a limited budget, or simply couldn’t schedule time to put preventative measures in place, you will have to repair the damage winter may have done. Here’s how to go about fixing some of those problems.
Faded Pavement Markings
Over time, your clients’ pavement markings will need to be touched up or completely redone. Fortunately, we offer all the asphalt supplies you need to get the job done once the weather warms up in the spring. Parking lot striping can become faded due to scrapes from snow plow blades, as well as due to old age. All pavement markings eventually need to be repainted so they remain clearly marked. Drivers tend to err on the side of caution by parking farther than they need to from other vehicles, which limits the capacity of your client’s asphalt parking lot. In other words, fewer cars are able to park because the parking lot striping isn’t visible. Supplies used to fix faded pavement markings include:
- line striping machine
- parking lot paint
- parking lot stencils
- chalk line (100 ft.)
- tape measure (300 ft.)
- asphalt sealer
Cracks
Asphalt expands and contracts with fluctuating temperatures. If your clients did not invest in asphalt maintenance last year, they may be looking at parking lots filled with cracks. When cracks are not repaired as soon as possible, they can fill up with water. Once water seeps into the foundation, it can irreparably damage the asphalt parking lot. Alligator cracking is a sign that the foundation of the asphalt parking lot has failed. Supplies needed are:
- Little Wonder lower or wire broom
- asphalt crack filler
- scraper/ Little Wonder Pros edger crack cleaner
- asphalt sealant
- v squeegee
- sand liner
Potholes
Once the snow melts, potholes can fill with water and compromise the foundations of asphalt parking lots. Potholes not only decrease the curb appeal of a parking lot, but pose as a hazard to drivers and pedestrians. This will require:
- Aqua Patch™
- cold patch asphalt
- asphalt tamper
